Blackburn Bonanza

This year's event is Thurs 17th to Sun 20th September 2020

The Blackburn Bonanza is the flagship event for the East Lancs Section. Since 1973 the East Lancs Section has been the custodian of the Blackburn Run which originated in 1913 as a road trial undertaken by members of the old Blackburn Motorcycle Club. In September 2013 the East Lancs Section celebrated the centenary of the original run by expanding the event to three days of rides in and around the Lancashire fell country. This has become an annual three day event.

The Blackburn Bonanza is classed as a social event, with spectacular scenery and top motorcycling roads – all on tarmac but with some ascents/descents and ‘twisty bits’ that challenge machine and rider without being daunting. Entrants, who will be sure of a warm ‘northern’ welcome, should be paid-up members of the VMCC and riding/driving solo or combination motorcycles or three-wheelers older than 25 years. We are particularly keen to encourage users of vintage machinery, especially on the Sunday ‘Blackburn Run’ which uses 95% of the 1913 route.

Two members on the Blackburn Bonanza cross Lythe Fell
towards Stocks Reservoir and the lunch stop at Gisburn.

Regulations and information for entrants:

There are no advance fees as each of the three runs will be treated as a separate event. The signing-on fee at the beginning of each daily run is £3. A FULL ROUTE SHEET WILL BE PROVIDED, THERE ARE YELLOW-JACKETED MARSHALS TO ACCOMPANY THE EVENT AND A FOLLOW-UP RECOVERY VAN IN CASE OF BREAKDOWNS

Accommodation. We host the events at two campsites on the outskirts of Clitheroe and between them is the Edisford Bridge Hotel that hosts the Thursday evening get-together and is the starting point for all the runs. There is also a wide range of both B+B and pub accommodation in the locality. Assuming most people doing all three runs will be arriving on Thursday, we hold a ‘meet and greet’ at 7pm at the Edisford Bridge Hotel, Clitheroe, BB7 3LJ. It's a traditional country pub which serves excellent food.

The two campsites for the Bonanza are:
Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site,

Sunday 20th Sept. 2020 - Bonanza Three, also known as ‘The Blackburn Run’

Leaving at 10.30am from the Edisford Bridge pub on Longridge Road, Clitheroe, BB7 3LJ. (Please note that no trailers or vans can be left in the pub car park during the day)

East Lancs Social run of 100 miles. Trophies for the oldest and the smallest machines to complete the event.

The run will follow as much as possible the original route of the first Blackburn Motor Cycle Club 100-Mile Road Trial held in 1913. We are keen to encourage the use of older machines on this event. Roads are narrow and winding in places but all are Tarmac-surfaced and the views are spectacular (weather permitting!) There is a morning coffee stop at Slaidburn and a lunch stop halfway round at Settle or Clapham (the latter to be decided). The afternoon run is a ‘loop’ through spectacular scenery to the Ribbleshead viaduct followed by a return route through picturesque Cravendale (Yorkshire) and Ribblesdale (Lancashire) villages to sign off at the Edisford Bridge Hotel in Clitheroe in the late afternoon.
